Kitchens that work harder. Yards that finally feel done.

Atlas is Mateo and Lia Sandoval — a husband-and-wife design-build pair renovating kitchens, baths, and outdoor living spaces across Sonoma. We take on roughly twelve projects a year. Drawings to dishwasher, all under one roof.

Who we are

Two designers, one shop, eleven years.

Atlas opened in 2015 in a 900-square-foot studio off the Healdsburg plaza. Mateo grew up swinging a hammer on his father's framing crew in San Rafael; Lia studied landscape architecture at Cal Poly and spent six years at a Bay Area firm before going out on her own. We met on a kitchen-yard combo project in Glen Ellen and have been designing together since.

We do the design and we run the build. That means the same person who drew your kitchen island is on site the morning the cabinets come off the truck. We sub out plumbing, electrical, and stone — everything else is our crew, our standards, our names on it.

Sixty-plus completed projects. Two long-tenured carpenters. Suppliers we've used for ten years and growers who'll plant your yard. We turn down more work than we take so the work we take is the work we want.

What we do

From a kitchen island to the back fence.

Kitchen renovation

Full-kitchen redesign and rebuild — cabinets, counters, lighting, layout. Most projects 12–18 weeks.

Bath renovation

Primary baths and powder rooms. Tile we'd put in our own house, fixtures from people who answer the phone.

Outdoor kitchen

Built-in grills, pizza ovens, prep counters, weather-rated cabinetry. Designed for actual cooking, not photo shoots.

Landscape design-build

Hardscape, planting plans, irrigation, drainage. Drought-tolerant native palette, mature stock when it matters.

Lighting design

Layered indoor and outdoor lighting plans. Warmer color temps, fewer fixtures, dimmers everywhere.

Carpentry & built-ins

Pergolas, fences, custom gates, library walls, mudroom benches. Anything our crew can build, we'd rather build.

Before, and after.

Every renovation starts with a wall, a slab, or a yard that isn't doing its job. Drag the handle on each project below to see how the space changed.

Glen Ellen Courtyard Living

Glen Ellen, CA · 2024

Petaluma Craftsman Bath + Mudroom — before renovationPetaluma Craftsman Bath + Mudroom — after renovation

Petaluma Craftsman Bath + Mudroom

Petaluma, CA · 2024

Sonoma Vineyard Front Yard

How we work

From sketch to housewarming.

  1. 01

    Discover

We sit down at your kitchen table for an hour. You tell us what isn't working and what you wish the space did. We measure, take photos, and ask the questions that decide the budget.

    1 visit · 60–90 min

  2. 02

    Design

Drawings, materials, and a fixed price. Two rounds of revisions are built in. By the time we finish design, you'll know what every surface looks like and what the project costs to the dollar.

    4–8 weeks

  3. 03

    Build

Our crew runs the project. One foreman on site every day, weekly walk-throughs, a shared photo log so you can keep up while you're at work. Subs are people we've used for years.

    8–18 weeks

  4. 04

    Live

Final walk-through, punch list, and a one-year check-in. We come back at the twelve-month mark to fix anything that has settled, squeaked, or surfaced. Most clients only see us once after that.

Words from the people who live in these rooms.

We interviewed four firms. Atlas was the only one where the people who drew our kitchen were the same people who built it. Six months in and we still notice details we didn't ask for.
Anna & Phil OrtegaHealdsburg · Hillside kitchen, 2025
Lia's plant plan looked sparse on paper and now I can't imagine the yard without a single plant in it. The pergola is the room we live in from May to October.
Jess McEntireGlen Ellen · Courtyard living, 2024
On budget, on schedule, and the crew were the kind of people you'd let stay alone in your house. That doesn't happen by accident — they hire well.
